On the first Monday the participants handed in their practical portfolio assignment for the previous module. The teaching team gave written feedback on the work presented in the portfolios. Students are motivated to improve their performance by use of their portfolio.
The overall objective of module 3 was to expose the 21 participant’s to pathology of the different abdominal organs, both in theory (lectures) and hands-on sessions.
The students all participated fully and with great enthusiasm in all sessions.
Furthermore time was allocated to common abnormalities in Obstetrical Ultrasound. Lastly, a lecture introducing Doppler Physics was conducted which will be continued during the next module because the participants showed great interest in this subject.
Labelling exercises were done and also a group discussion on a theory (homework) assignment.
In module 2 there was a practical exam at the end of the module on Abdominal scanning and this time the module ended with a practical exam on Obstetrical scanning for each individual student. Finally, on the last day a theory exam was written.
An improvement in all students in scanning skills and theoretical knowledge could be observed. Both the teaching team and the participants enjoyed this 3rd module.

Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba, in short the BES islands of the former Dutch Antilles, each received new high standard ambulances this summer. The new equipment forms the start of the enhancement of the emergency care services on the three islands.

MeduProf-S has been invited to train the nursing staff involved with emergency care and the ambulance drivers. The approach will be integrated since the staff are involved in all parts of the emergency care process, starting with the care in the ambulance to preparing the patient for transfer to a hospital on St. Maarten or Curacao or the mainland of South America. Bonaire is the only island where there is also a special care unit.

From 13th-23rd July MeduProf-S expert in Emergency Care, Erik van Roon and project manager Harmen Grebel prepared and introduced the courses and the train the trainers principle, assessed the needs for training and the competencies of the proposed trainers. Planning and other operational aspects were discussed with the local staff. One of the specific points of attention was the care involved with diving accidents, one of the attractions for the many tourists visiting the three islands.

From 5-9 July 2010, Module 5 of the Hospital Management Training in Kenya was facilitated by Winny Koster.

The title of this module was Medical Anthropology and International Health Policies with a guest lecturer, Benson Mulemi, presenting ‘Ethnography of the Cancer Ward in Kenyatta Hospital’.

The majority of participants had no previous experience with anthropology and in the evaluation many called it an eye opener and highly relevant for their hospital practice as manager and health practitioner. Medical anthropology was introduced as being the study of health, ill health, health care, culture and society and the mutual relations. This field is set in the wider context of (inter)national policies and programmes. Medical anthropology studies plural medical systems, and participants identified different types of traditional healers in Kenya. A debate was conducted on whether traditional healers should be integrated in the Kenyan health system. Ill health is also studied from a doctor’s perspective (disease) and from the patient’s perspective (illness) – participants realized that these perspectives may be different and be one of the reasons for non-adherence to prescribed drugs or treatment or not coming for treatment in the hospital at all.

Overall the sessions were highly participatory, with a lot of laughs about cultural differences. The facilitator appreciated gaining a lot of culture specific information on ill health and health care in Kenya, provided in group sessions by the participants.

From June 21 – July 2 the second Ultrasound module of 4 was conducted at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Nairobi.
As this is a continuation of the Ultrasound Training, the same 21 participants that attended module 1 were present.
The overall objective of module 2 was to teach the normal anatomy of the spleen, kidneys and female pelvis as well as the normal obstetrical Ultrasound anatomy in the first, second and third trimester. This was all discussed both in theory and hands-on sessions.

<img src="http://www.meduprof-s.nl/testsite/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Module-2.Ultrasound-training-in-Nairobi.-Practical-session.-300x225.jpg" alt="" title="Module 2.Ultrasound training in Nairobi.
During the hands on sessions the normal anatomy of the liver, pancreas and gallbladder, taught during module 1, was repeated to ensure that the students had a working knowledge of the antomy of these areas.

During module 1 and this module each participant had to work on a portfolio whereby they had to print images of the different abdominal organs and paste them in their portfolio. The portfolio’s were handed in and the teachers gave feedback on the performance of the students. This is an excellent way to improve performance and master scanning skills.

The participants also began to look at pathology of the different abdominal organs and the possible anomalies that can be diagnosed in Obstetrical Ultrasound. This is in preparation for Module 3 when they will be exposed to a wide variety of pathologies.

<img src="http://www.meduprof-s.nl/testsite/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Module-2.Ultrasound-training-in-Nairobi.-Group-photo-300x188.jpg" alt="" title="Module 2.Ultrasound training in Nairobi. The module ended with a practical exam for each individual student and a written exam consisting of 75 MCQ questions. All participants passed both exams with a final average mark being above 60%.

From 13 to 22 July MeduProf-S will present an introductory course ‘Emergency Care Nursing’ on the Dutch Antilles Islands of St. Eustatius, Saba and Bonaire under a contract with Fundashon Mariadal on Bonaire.
The three islands are due to receive new ambulances (the first has already arrived) to improve the level of emergency care. The development of the involved staff is therefore an important condition for this improvement. MeduProf-S will provide an integrated approach whereby nurses working on the ambulances, in the emergency care department and in the intensive care department will be trained to work in all 3 situations. In this way a coherent emergency care service can be provided and the flexibility of available staff will ensure that staff utilisation is optimal.
The introductory course will also be used to assess the specific needs for each Island and the full course will be carried out later this year.
