Uganda
Phase I: 2004 to December 2008 and
Phase II: September 2008 to October 2011
In 2004 MeduProf-S began its relationship with Uganda with the rehabilitation of Ultrasound and X-ray education as part of an ORET program. Together with the Ernest Cook Ultrasound Research and Education Institute (ECUREI ) and the School of Radiography at Makerere University, MeduProf-S undertook to improve the quality of the medical imaging programs in Uganda to European levels.

Practical Ultrasound training
Included in the project was a new Ultrasound Diploma course, consisting of six modules of two weeks duration over a one year period; radiography refresher courses; a revised radiography curriculum; e-Learning and assistance with the supply of support equipment in a new skills lab facility. Existing knowledge from ECUREI and the School of Radiography was used as a base for this program.

Student discussions during an Ultrasound course
In September 2008 the second ORET project started (Phase II)
Under Phase II, MeduProf-S continues to cooperate with Makerere University and ECUREI. The main goal is to maintain a continuous exchange of knowledge between the institutes and MeduProf-S and to provide sustainable course programs which are recipient driven.
The Education Program Phase II includes four elements:
- a training program for students on Ultrasound techniques;
- a training program for students on X-ray techniques;
- the development and execution of a training program for students on Biomedical Engineering;
- a training program on Hospital Waste Management.

Ultrasound and X-Ray
Each element has a short-term component linked to the equipment delivery and a long-term component designed to establish a structural education infrastructure in the country. The long-term element in terms of curriculum development for Ultrasound and X-ray techniques has been carried out within the scope of ORET I. Under Phase II, only additional students will be trained according to the established curriculum.
Biomedical Engineering
During Phase I of the ORET program, the need of a Biomedical Engineering program at Diploma level was recognized.
The objective is to train Biomedical Engineering Technicians to Diploma level and to train them with practical skills in diagnosing and first line repair of equipment.
The Biomedical Engineering curriculum development program contains:
- Coaching and support with respect to Curriculum Development for the Biomedical Engineering Diploma program of two years
- Tele-education to encourage workers to gain knowledge through e-Learning and to connect them with colleagues in the country and the rest of the world to exchange knowledge
- A teachers exchange to Holland for four weeks for local teachers to get 'customer demand' training in didactical and technical/clinical skills
- Library books and lesson materials.
Hospital Waste Management
The Hospital Waste Management component is set up as a 'Train the Trainers' concept. After completion of the courses the participants will have gained the competences to train local staff in Waste Management and Infection Control in practise. They will be able to improve the knowledge of the local staff in relation to the local criteria and guidelines used by the WHO.
The participants will be able to make a workplan to implement Hospital Waste Management / Infection Control in their health institution.
